Phellodendron amurense

Description of the Phellodendron amurense

  • The international scientific name is Dendro-panax, which means panacea.
  • It belongs to the elm family and is a tree with whole leaves. It grows wild along the southern coast of Korea and on Jeju Island, making it the only native tree species in the world.
  • The leaves do not fall even in winter, and the leaves grow fully, and the tree grows up to 15 meters. White flowers bloom in June, and there are always 30 to 40 oblong fruit balls until they ripen to black in October. The leaves are usually forked, initially with 2 to 5 deeply forked leaves, and finally with oblong leaves without serrations on the leaf margins. The bark is uneven and slippery, and the branches are green and moist.
The yellow paint extracted from the bark is golden, and the resin contains benzoin, which has been used for its pharmacological action since ancient times. In the past, yellow paint was used as a golden natural paint, but now, modern scientific research results have been published based on the pharmacological action recorded in ancient literature.
The scientific name of the so-called ‘panacea’ means that yellow suggests a new future for health food.
  • There is a Japanese zelkova tree in Japan, but it is only used as an ornamental tree and does not contain zelkova.
  • Chinese lacquer became extinct before the Jiaqing period (1208-1224).
